PROJECT: Express the various stages of development that designers experience through a lifelong career.
BACKGROUND: For nearly a decade, I have observed the life and career of various designers at different stages in their progression. While in my Masters program I noticed various similarities shared among over twenty professional designers who presented at our Design Dialogues Speaker Series. Most common was the way these professionals define their methods, processes, and epistemology. This diagram is an attempt to simplify and clarify these various developmental stages and assist designers in identifying their own progression.
RESULTS: This diagram has assisted me, as well as other designers, to come to an understanding of where we stand in terms of individual growth and also to comprehend what must be done to continually advance.
